Demolition on a crippled Marion County building in downtown Knoxville will begin this week once final documentation is acquired after the Board of Supervisors gave authorization Tuesday.

Marion County Maintenance Director Cal Stephens says a certificate from the structural engineer that inspected the building, located at 113 & 115 Third Street, is still needed and expected at any time. The certificate is required so that an emergency declaration can be made by the county, allowing them to act without public bidding procedures.
Stephens also says a small amount of asbestos was discovered in the back of the building and must be removed before demolition can begin.
