Last week, the Iowa Senate passed a bill that would make the use of electronic devices while driving a primary offense.

District 14 State Senator Amy Sinclair said she voted against the bill last session because texting while driving is already illegal, but a recent fatal accident that killed two children due to a person texting led her to change her mind and vote for the bill this time. She says despite the fact texting while driving is illegal in Iowa, people aren’t getting the message and something more drastic must be done.
Texting while driving is currently a secondary offense in Iowa, meaning a person can only be charged if a law enforcement officer pulls the driver over for another offense.
