The American Bison is making a comeback in Marion and Monroe Counties. Mike DeCook tells KNIA/KRLS news that the DeCook family has brought 51 Bison to approximately 1,000 acres of woodlands and pasture they own in southern Marion and Northern Monroe county. They plan to build the herd to 250-300 head and eventually harvest the bison in a sustainable ranching effort. According to DeCook, bison meat is tasty, healthy, lean and in great demand. The bison will be grass fed, with occasional hay being supplemented as needed.

This effort is part of the family’s vision to return the landscape to a more natural setting that benefits all wildlife including native plants, as well as turn a profit. Future eco-tourism and educational efforts also being planned. Previously the land was used for a grass fed beef operation.
