Each year, the second Monday of October we commemorate the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12th of 1492. Despite controversy on whether or not he was the one to discover America, Columbus Day has been celebrated as a federal holiday in the U.S. since 1937. In observation of Columbus Day, most area banks will be closed Monday and mail will not be delivered again until tomorrow. However, city and county offices will remain open.
