Bird migration is ramping up in the area, according to the Marion County Naturalist Marla Mertz.

As part of her March Nature Notes, Mertz says that many species of birds have begun making the trek north from the wintering spots in warmer regions throughout Central and South America. Mertz also said with the noticeable seasonal changes beginning to appear, bird migration will reach its peak this month.

“This is just the most fascinating time of year. We have numerous waterfowl moving in and we’ve had thousands and thousands of snow and blue geese coming in. The breeding birds are all coming in first, so they can get to their northern territories, and then the non-breeders will follow. So, it will continue for a little while longer, but this fast and furious migration goes very fast and it’s time to enjoy the newness and the rebirth of spring to come into our area.”
