There will be a dedication for the new Blue Star Memorial Marker at the Bessie Spaur Butterfly Garden this Saturday. The Blue Star Memorial Program was started after World War Two by a garden club in New Jersey as a way to honor service men and women. It is named for the banner with a blue star on it, which commonly represents a family that has a member in active service. The National Garden Club adapted the program in 1945. Since then, the Blue Star Memorials have spread to all 50 states. Sandra Chrisman, with the Knoxville Federated Garden Club, says that this will be the sixty-sixth Blue Star Marker in Iowa, and the second in Marion County. The dedication will be at 9:30 am, and the public is invited to join.
