Lawmakers have come to a solution to try and improve the state’s five-cent deposit law and a bill has been sent to Governor Kim Reynolds’ desk. State Senator Ken Rozenboom says while it was far from what he has proposed to the Iowa Senate over the years, a bi-partisan group of lawmakers has approved changes to the state’s Bottle Bill. According to the new proposal, most stores could refuse empty beverage containers, but the handling fee paid to redemption centers increases from 1 cent to 3 cents, and all that continue accepting bottles and cans would also the increased rate. The original redemption legislation passed in 1978 was a means to decrease littering across the state.
