Legislators have wrapped up the first week of the 2017 session.

Earlier this week, Governor Terry Branstad announced $110 million in cuts to the current fiscal year’s budget as part of his condition of the state address. State Senator Ken Rozenboom tells KNIA/KRLS News the governor’s office and the Iowa House of Representatives will largely tackle the issue with the Senate taking a secondary role, as they were the minority party when the budget was developed. Rozenboom is concerned the impact the proposed cuts would have on higher education.

According to the recommendations made by Branstad, Iowa’s Regents Universities and community colleges stand to lose upwards of $34 million.
