Central College in Pella
Central College is preparing to welcome over 400 first-year and transfer students to campus this weekend, which is another strong enrollment number for the college. However, the situation didn’t always look so promising. Carol Williamson, Vice President of Enrollment at Central, says in mid-May, confirmed registrations were lower than the school had hoped for.
“We were quite nervous in spring of this year, and about mid-May the number didn’t look as healthy as it does today, and I think a lot of that has to do with the residual effects of the economy, as other businesses are feeling as well.”
Williamson said the situation was a common one for nearly every college throughout the Midwest.
“I think not just Central, but colleges across the country and the Midwest were seeing the same sort of behavior patterns from students this spring, and many colleges were in our same situation,” said Williamson. “Usually colleges are talking about ‘Oh, we’re done,’ or ‘We have our numbers,’ and nobody was really at that point in mid-May this year.”
Last year, 443 students were enrolled for the fall semester at Central College, which was the third largest enrollment ever. Classes at Central will start next Wednesday.

Iowa Private College Week at Central College
Iowa Private College Week during the past few days. The yearly event is intended as an opportunity for high school students and their parents to get onto college campuses and learn more about their options for higher education. Terri Crumley, Director of Admissions at Central says the week has given private colleges a chance to showcase all they have to offer.
“It’s been a great way for people in the state of Iowa to understand that private colleges have a lot to offer. Out state universities are wonderful, but private colleges actually have a wonderful experience for so many young people,” says Crumley.
“Every college has something to offer different people, and so the best way to find out if it’s a good situation for you is to go visit. That’s really the only way you’re going to be able to find out if it’s for you; and that’s what this week is all about.”
Like many of the other colleges participating, Central College has spent the week hosting campus tours and informative sessions on everything from financial aid to what the day-to-day life of a college student is like.
Central has held one of the best-attended Iowa Private College Week events during the past five years, and had a record 440 students registered to participate this week. Registration is not required to attend, but can be done by contacting the Central College admission office or visiting www.Central.edu. Iowa Private College Week runs through Friday.
