Soggy Start For Central Men’s Golf Squad In Illinois

Posted: Saturday, April 23rd, 2011 at 5:59 am

Central College’s Justin Livingston (sophomore, Winterset) is tied for second after an abbreviated first round at the Monmouth Scot-Fire Invitational Friday.
After heavy rains drenched the Soangetaha Country Club, Friday’s start time was pushed back and the round was shortened to nine holes. The teams are slated to conclude with an 18-hole round Saturday at the Gibson Woods Golf Course in Monmouth.
Livingston fired a 2-under-par 34, but Jason Harvey (senior, Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS), Alex Huyser (senior, Sully, Lynnville-Sully HS), Brent Messmore (junior, Hudson) and Drew Osier (sophomore, Austin, Minn.) all carded 38.
“Justin had two birdies and the rest were pars,” coach Chad Green said. “He played pretty steady golf. He’s hitting the ball well.”
Millikin (Ill.) leads the tournament with 140 while Central shot 148 and is tied for fourth. Central’s second unit, the White squad, also stands at 148. Travis Havens (junior, Belmond, Belmond-Klemme HS) led the unit with 36. Brent Goodenow (junior, Johnston) and Erik Grunder (sophomore, Wilton) each shot 37, Will Overlander (junior, Argyle, Texas) had 38 and Ben Bohlender (senior, Indianola) shot 40.
Complete results were unavailable.
“We didn’t play great but we didn’t play badly, either,” Green said. “One thing we struggled with was our putting. We hit the ball as well as we have all year, we’re just not making putts. The greens were wet and slow, but it is what it is.
“We’re anxious to see how we do tomorrow with a full 18 holes.”
