It was a day of state track meet records and thrilling finishes on the Blue Oval for the Class 3A boys’ state meet inside Drake Stadium, and the Little Dutch and Panthers finished one-two in the state to take home some hardware. Pella and Knoxville were staying stride-for-stride as they made their ways towards the top of the leaderboard in the team standings throughout the day. Knoxville’s Wick Cunningham came in second place in the 800, just ahead of Wade Pingel of Pella. Ryan Douglas finished seventh for Knoxville in the 110 meter hurdles, while Pella’s boys countered with a fourth place in the 4 x 100 meter relay. Cunningham also placed sixth in the 1600 meters. Entering the final event of the day, the 4 x 400 meter relay, Pella had 40 points and Knoxville had 35, meaning the Little Dutch needed at least third place to secure a Class 3A state championship. The Panthers would place first in the event, but in the final 100 meters, anchor Wade Pingel pulled into the lead for third place after starting the leg in fourth, and Pella celebrated with a state championship. The final score was Pella 46, Knoxville 45.
