Simpson College was the site of a campaign event Thursday, hosting Democratic Party candidates for the Iowa Legislature, Congressional, and Governor offices. State Senate District 11 candidate Lisa Fleishman, State House of Representatives District 21 candidate Joe Kerner, US House of Representatives 1st Congressional District candidate Christina Bohannan, and Iowa Governor candidate Deidre DeJear.

DeJear tells KNIA News she is emboldened by seeing Iowa residents during the campaign support her policies and sharing what they need from the Governor’s office.

“As I’ve traveled throughout the state for the last year and a half, I’ve recognized all the good that exists in our state. Good, hard working people who are committed to their families and committed to their communities, and unfortunately people are having to work way too hard. They don’t have access to childcare, they don’t have access to healthcare that meets their needs, a mental healthcare system. They are troubled with the school system. These are things that are possible to overcome, but we need leadership. We need a governor who is willing to help us overcome them. This is not going to be easy.”

Bohannan tells KNIA News that not only is democracy and the right to reproductive rights are at stake in this election, but workers rights are under attack.

“Everyday working people in Iowa, what we are seeing is some of our representatives are taking lots of money from corporate donors from multimillionaires, and then voting against things that are good for everyday Iowans. Against infrastructure, against jobs, against bringing down inflation. I think people here know that, and I think they are going to get out and vote.”
