A physician in the Emergency Department at Pella Regional Health Center has been chosen by the Iowa Hospital Association as one of ten “Hospital Heroes” for 2010. Dr. Matt Gritters is known by his peers as a doctor of exceptional skill and a compassionate manner, and in one nomination, a colleague wrote:

“…what makes him special is the feeling a patient, family member or staff member have when being cared for by him or working with him. He exudes a calm peacefulness in his demeanor and keenly listens and then reflectively responds. He offers encouragement and hope to all that are suffering and interjects the right amount of humor when appropriate…we have many instances in our Emergency Department where we say, ‘I’m glad Dr. Gritters was here to care for this one.’”

Dr. Matt Gritters was nominated by nurses Pam Boat, Carla Chow, Sherri Church and Joan Vande Krol for exceptional care given in the emergency setting, both in Pella and around the world. Dr. Gritters has cared for patients outside of the U.S. through medical mission work, including his most recent trip in March, when he went to Haiti to help victims injured in the earthquakes. Dr. Gritters will be recognized at the Iowa Hospital Association’s annual meeting on October 7th.
