Several Local High Schoolers Compete in Friday Sessions at Drake Relays

Cooler temperatures and higher-ranked competition prevented our local high school athletes from having the same degree of success on Friday at the Drake Relays as they enjoyed on Thursday, but 23 total athletes competing in five different events still came away with a number of things to be proud of.

Central College track and field athlete Ethan Miller was the top Division III competitor in Drake Relays decathlon Thursday, scoring 7,076 points to take fourth overall.

Central Relay Teams Close Strong at Drake

One day after breaking the school’s 4×200 meter relay record, the Central College women’s 4×400 meter relay team shattered the mark they had set two weeks earlier to highlight a strong finish by the Dutch track and field squads at the Drake Relays in Des Moines.

Drake Relays On The Mind Of Knoxville Boys Track and Field

While the official Drake Relays high school qualifying list will not be released until Saturday…Knoxville likely will have at least two events that will solidly qualify. Derek Seddon in the discus and the Panthers four-by-800 meter relay team. The team of Blake Wyatt, Tim Shepherd, Jamie VanderVeer, and Alex Edwards have a season best time of just over eight minutes last week at the Chariton Meet. Coach Mike Cunningham the Second says his four-by-800 team made the Drake Relays with some help from their rivals across the river. Cunningham adds all of his runner had personal best splits and says running with a team like Pella actually pushed the Knoxville runners a little more. The Panthers are at the Rocket Relays in Eddyville tonight.

Most local scheduled events were cancelled or postponed yesterday, however the rain didn’t stop the Drake Relays, and despite the wet, sometimes miserable conditions, it was a successful day for area athletes on the “ Blue Oval”.
