A bill has been introduced in the Iowa Legislature which would make a variety of changes to election processes in the state. One of the proposed changes is reducing the absentee voting window from 29 days to 18 days prior to an election. State Senator Amy Sinclair says this would put Iowa in line with the national average.

“It would narrow down the absentee voting window, it doesn’t eliminate absentee voting at all. 18 days is the national average for mail-in voting, and that gets Iowa in line with the national average. I’ve worked with elections and what not, and New York, which I don’t think anyone would say is a Republican stronghold, only has a 10-day absentee voting window. This still keeps us well within the norm of what the national average is for absentee voting.”

Other changes proposed in the bill include prohibiting absentee ballots being pre-populated with voter information when they are sent, and the ability for county auditors to be criminally charged for intentional election misconduct. Sinclair represents State Senate District 14, encompassing much of Marion County. Hear about the latest in the Iowa Legislature with Sinclair on today’s edition of Let’s Talk Knoxville.
