The US Army Corps of Engineers has just released a study of the Des Moines River stating the risk of floods like those of 1993 and 2008 is greater than previously estimated. The Corps requested funding to study the river reservoir at Red Rock Lake and other river reservoirs in the state. Those studies indicated that river levels are rising higher and more often in recent years. Corps of Engineers spokesman Ron Fournier says the new information will help people understand their flood risk. He says many people aren’t aware that they live behind a levee system until that levee fails. Fournier says this new information should help people decide what course of action to take to prepare themselves for possible future flooding.
