The announcement by Missouri River Energy Services to construct a hydroelectric plant at Lake Red Rock is a positive step away the city’s coal fired power plant.

Pella City Administrator Mike Nardini says regulations set to go into effect next year would have been difficult to meet given the age of the coal plant, and membership in the Missouri River Co-op helps spread the cost of meeting any new standards.

Additionally, the new plant would increase reliability for a four county area. He adds that other requirements to generate a certain portion of power from renewable sources, which would not have been possible with the coal plant, will no longer be a concern with the new hydro plant.
