The Iowa Department of Natural Resources issued the latest fall colors report on Tuesday.

As of this week, coffee trees are starting to turn yellow, as are walnut, cottonwood, and silver maple trees. Some of those trees are also starting to lose their leaves. Drought stressed maples are changing color, especially in urban areas. Central College Professor of Biology Paul Weihe says that while it likely won’t be a long viewing season, the fall colors should be good.

“I would suggest go out and have a look, particularly on those days when we’ve had some good lights and you get those colors coming out. Go out a little bit earlier than you might normally most years, and probably you won’t have as many days or weeks to view them, but I guess the good news is, probably the colors themselves are going to be really good.”

Peak fall colors viewing season is expected to take place October 16th through the 20th.
