It was a tale of two halves for the Knoxville Girls Basketball Squad and a night to remember for Kieren Nichols Friday night in Chariton. The Panther girls defeated the Chargers after another slow start 45-25, while Nichols poured in a career high 37 points to lead the boys to a come-from-behind 65-57 win as heard on KNIA. Nichols was in a zone hitting threes, driving layups and floaters in the lane and causing Chariton more headaches than the loud crowd in the Charger Dome. The Panthers initially fell behind ten/nothing to start the game, but outscored Chariton the rest of the first quarter 19-7 to pull within two. After being tied at 26 at halftime, the Panthers started to establish their way and built a lead as high as 12 before settling for the eight point win. Coach Jeff Larson told KNIA/KRLS Sports, Nichols had the hot hand, so they kept feeding him. The girls also had an issue with the number ten last night early in their game with Chariton, as in only scoring ten points in the first half. The good news was Chariton was also struggling on offense and also had ten points at the break. The Panthers used halftime to get their selves righted and outscored the Chargers in the second half 35-15 to win by the 20 point margin. Coach Jim Uitermarkt told KNIA/KRLS Sports it was just giving the girls some confidence in the locker room at the half the key to the second half run. Maggie Wilkins scored ten of her 14 points in the second half while Katie Keitges had nine of her ten in the second half as well. Both Panther teams are still unbeaten with the boys at 3-0 and the girls at 5-0. Both will head to Davis County on Tuesday.
