The debate surrounding the use of taxpayer money for Planned Parenthood may be the sticking point that extends the 2016 Legislative Session even further.

Early last week, the Iowa House voted to defund the program by not allowing Medicaid dollars to support organizations that provide abortions. On Friday, the Iowa Senate voted to keep the funding in the health and human services budget.

State Senator Ken Rozenboom attempted to add an amendment aiming to establish a state family planning services program to the Senate version of the bill, which failed in a 25-25 tie. He argues that taxpayers with objections should not be forced to have their tax dollars support abortion providers.

If Planned Parenthood were to be defunded, supporters claim more than $3 million in federal dollars would be lost to support women’s health programs.
