Property assessments have been mailed out to property owners in Marion County. If property owners feel their evaluations are inaccurate, they can file a protest. Marion County Assessor Kelli Kingrey says there are a few valid reasons that assessments can be protested.

“There are different reasons you can protest. Some of them might be actual market, some of them might be an error in the assessment, like a bathroom or a finished basement, something like that. Maybe you had a building torn down that we didn’t know about. These are all things that need to be corrected, and yes, we need to know about those. Those would be valid reasons to protest.”

Many corrections can be made with a phone call, and some may require a home visit. An informal protest must be made by April 25th, while a formal protest must be made by April 30th. Learn more about property assessments here and on an upcoming In Depth.
