Shane Wong is edging closer to yet another award, College/University Male Athlete of the Year in the Central Iowa Sports Awards. The awards on sponsored by The Des Moines Area Sports Commission, part of the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau.

These awards recognize individuals and teams who have pursued athletic excellence with honor in 2010. Award winners will be named during the CISA banquet Sunday, Feb. 27 at 5:30 p.m. at the Meadows Ballroom at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona. You can participate in online voting once a day through February 18. To vote, log on to SeeDesMoines.com/CISA. You must register prior to casting your vote.

Wong has tough competition for the award, going up against Josh Young, Drake basketball; Jake Knott, Iowa State football; Jake Varner, Iowa State wrestling, E.J. Peterson, Grand View football; Dain Taylor, Drake football.

Earlier this year, Wong was a third-team selection on the D3football.com All-America team. He also received the Iowa Conference’s Most Valuable Defensive Player Award. Wong was One of five Central players chosen to compete with a Division III all-star team at the Tazon de Estrellas last month. Shane was named the league’s defensive player of the week twice (once in September and Novemeber) and he was selected to the D3football.com team of the week in September as well.
