Two Rivers Coop in Pella is being proactive in response to pending climate change “cap-and trade” legislation at the federal level. Tracy Gathman, general manager of Two Rivers Coop, says that the coop is working with FCStone Carbon of West Des Moines to assess the carbon footprint of Two Rivers’ operations. Gathman says that one concern with the legislation is that sales of nitrogen fertilizer count against the carbon footprint of the seller of the fertilizer, not the buyer. The possibility exists that sellers may either have to reduce sales or buy carbon credits to remain under proposed caps. According to Gathman, both options are likely to effect business, farming, and ultimately food prices in a negative way.
