Before there was Lake Red Rock, there was the town of Red Rock – a thriving pioneer community that was plagued by frequent flooding of the Des Moines River. Friday afternoon, the Red Rock Visitor Center is hosting a special program on the history of the former town, the location of which now lies below the waters of Iowa’s largest lake. Park Ranger Tracy Spry will host the program, “The Town Beneath the Lake,” which begins at 1:00 p.m. Friday at the Visitor Center, just south of the dam.
