Fans were expecting to see a hard fought game in Centerville last night between two rated, undefeated teams both expected to contend for a district championship and in the end saw just that as sixth rated Centerville upset fourth ranked Pella 44-43 in overtime in the Class 3A District 6 opener for both teams. Early on it looked like Centerville would dominate as they scored on their first four possessions to take a 29-7 lead after one quarter. Refusing to go down early Pella scored 22 unanswered points in the second quarter to tie the game at 29-29 at halftime. After a scoreless third quarter Centerville scored to take the lead with 9:00 left to play. Pella answered with just 43 seconds remaining to tie the game at 36-36 and force overtime . Pella scored first in overtime and kicked the extra point to take their only lead 43-36. Centerville answered with a touchdown and elected to go for two and converted to get the win. Centerville’s Tanner Susin was a machine scoring 5 touchdowns including the winning touchdown and conversion. Pella Coach Jay Mckinstrey says it was a tough loss for Pella but he was very impressed with how they fought their way back in the game. He says although it’s a loss, he thinks it will help the kids grow as the season progresses. Matt Myers had 2 rushing touchdowns for Pella, Richie Bales had 2 receiving touchdowns and 2 interceptions on defense, Brett Bogaard and Josh Pringle each had a touchdown as well. Blaine Forsythe was 17 for 28 through the air for 251 yards , 3 touchdowns and threw 1 interception. Pella dropped to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in district play and will celebrate homecoming Friday night when they host Chariton.
