Cooler temperatures are definitely making residents think more about fall, but this time of the year is also time to think about the spring… it’s tulip planting season!  Typically the ideal time to plant tulip bulbs is anywhere from the beginning to middle of October.

Sheryl Nunnikhoven with Dutch Meadows Garden Center of Pella says tulips should be planted about five or six inches deep with the pointed end facing up.  Nunnikhoven adds that those wishing to plant fewer bulbs should arrange them in small clusters rather than individuals spaced apart, and recommends adding some bone meal or bulb booster with them.  She also says this time of year is also the time to plant several other varieties of spring bulbs, such as daffodils, hyacinth, allium and crocus.
