A committee of Marion County residents and other partners are working to revive a Lake Red Rock campground, especially for campers and paddlers. Ann Robinson with the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation tells KNIA/KRLS News the committee is fixing up the Hickory Ridge Wilderness Camp as the lake’s first public site for primitive camping. Central College Biology Professor Russ Benedict says “The campground is a diamond in the rough.” Eunice Folkerts, with the Red Rock Lake Association says the wilderness campground is a rare opportunity to attract visitors to the south side of the lake. The project is a partnership between the Red Rock Lake Association, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, and pledges are still needed. The total project cost is $405,000 and is 40% complete, but $230,000 in pledges and donations is still needed. To pledge or for more information, call Anita at 515-288-1846.
