Visible progress is being made daily on the Habitat for Humanity house in Pella, and soon the home’s new owners will move in. Marion County Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Lisa Houser tells KNIA/KRLS News that Shawn and Hillary Vande Kieft are preparing to assume ownership of the home, which may be finished as soon as January. The Vande Kiefts have three young boys and are expecting a fourth baby boy later this fall.

Houser says the new residents will put in 300 hours of “sweat equity,” meaning work on their own home, another Habitat for Humanity home, or work in the community. They also make a down payment equivalent to one percent of the cost of the home, among other requirements.

The mortgage is zero percent and Habitat sells the home for the cost of materials alone, to help keep the price as affordable as possible. The Pella High School Construction Trades class has been working on the home on Oskaloosa and Prairie Street during the week, along with help from volunteers on the weekend, and hopes are to have the home ready to move into in January.
