Pella Christian took care of business beating Wayne last night 41-0 to end the regular season. Mount Ayr and Central Decatur also won their games forcing a three way tie for the district’s top spot, however the Eagles won the points tie breaker and were crowned Class 1A District 6 champs for the second consecutive year. The Eagles got off to a quick start last night on two first quarter touchdowns by Alex Fynaardt, the first a 42 yard run on the Eagles opening possession and the second on a 7 yard reception from Kyle Nikkel which followed a fumble recovery by the Eagles defense at the Wayne seven yard line. The offense stalled a bit in the second quarter as Wayne moved up and down the field but the defense forced three Falcon turnovers and the Eagles led 14-0 at the half. Assistant coach Darrell DeRuiter said they were very pleased with the Eagles effort especially in the second half. The second half was a much different story as Pella Christian held Wayne to eight total yards and added three third quarter scores by Brett Nieuwsma, Sam Twedt and Kyle Nikkel to take control of the game before adding a fourth quarter score by Colin DeBruin to ice the win. Brett Nieuwsma had another good ground game rushing for 126 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries pushing his season total to 1271 yards, Fynaardt rushed for 95 yards as the Eagles gained 341 of their 358 yards on the ground. The defense came up with three interceptions and one fumble recovery. Pella Christian ends the regular season 7-2 and 6-1 in district play. They now prepare to host Panorama Wednesday at 7pm in the Class 1A Substate round of the playoffs. If they win they would be home again hosting either Woodward Granger or Des Moines Christian Monday November 2nd.
