Pella kept their season alive with a thrilling 31-24 win at Williamsburg last night in the Class 3A Sub State. The Little Dutch made big play after big play all night long when they needed to and coach Jay Mckinstrey says with their season on the line the guys answered the call in a big way:

“It doesn’t matter what we’ve done all year, all we could do is control what we did tonight, and our kids came out and played a great game, they played with a ton of heart, that was as much heart as we’ve played with all season and that’s what we’ve been looking for and I hope our kids can keep it going”

Pella took advantage of two Williamsburg fumbles in the opening quarter and built a 10-0 lead on a 46 yard field goal and 23 yard run both by Blaine Forsythe. Williamsburg answered in the second quarter with two scores to grab a 14-10 lead. It looked like Pella would get the lead back just before halftime but a Josh Pringle touchdown catch was called back on a penalty. Forsythe then attempted a 32 yard field goal but it was blocked and the Raiders held the advantage at halftime.

The second half was filled with big plays on both sides. Spencer Boeyink intercepted a pass in the third quarter which led to a 20 yard touchdown pass from Forsythe to Ryan Lanke to put Pella ahead 17-14. Williamsburg tied the score on a field goal three minutes later, then on the ensuing kickoff Dekkar Lynch broke loose for a 90 yard return to put Pella back on top 24-17. Mckinstrey says in a game of big plays that may have been the biggest. Williamsburg tied the game again with 10:30 to play but Pella got the game winner on a 45 yard run by Forsythe who finished the game with 92 yards and a touchdown passing and 71 yards and two touchdowns rushing. Pella improves to 7-3 on the season and now has a rematch with Grinnell at Grinnell in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs Monday night after the Tigers beat Fairfield 27-7 last night. Grinnell beat Pella 14-3 in the regular season at Pella. In other scores of interest Centerville beat Washington 40-8 last night and Clear Creek Amana beat Carlisle 38-3. Those two play Monday in Centerville.
