The Marion County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to never send money to unknown parties saying they will reimburse you for an item or service. Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Mel Vander Weil tells KNIA/KRLS News that a scammer sent a check to a Marion County resident which far exceeded the asking price the resident had on an item for sale on the internet. The scammer then asked the resident to cash the check and send them the excess amount, although usually the scammer checks are phony and the victim is out of the amount they sent to the scammer. Vander Weil says anybody suspicious of entities asking for personal or financial information should call 828-2220.
