Marion County officials hope a bridge replacement near 60th Avenue will be complete within the next year. Jay Davis from the Marion County Engineer’s Office says 80% of the cost for the replacement of the bridge on Virginia Street will come from the federal county bridge fund, with the remaining 20% funded by the Union Pacific railroad. The County Board of Supervisors authorized the project this week, and farmers near the bridge want to see a crossing over the tracks while crews work on the bridge, so they can get to their fields without driving a six mile detour. However, county Supervisor Jim Kingery says nothing’s for certain: the railroad gets the final say on any new railroad crossings while the bridge is getting replaced. The new bridge will have a much higher-and safer- load limit for heavy machinery.
