An early season rivalry in girls basketball last night saw PCM beat Pella Christian 47-38. Pella Christian led 9-5 after one quarter but PCM caught fire in the second quarter using a 19-7 run to build a 24-16 lead at halftime. Pella Christian had some runs in the second half but could never re gain the lead. It was a typical rivalry type of game that featured, hard, intense, physical play at times , but also very sloppy play at times as the two teams combined for over 60 total turnovers. This was the season opener for PCM and coach Ben Anderson says although it wasn’t pretty at times he was pleased with their overall play, especially defensively.[simage=1026,200,y,right]
Pella Christian coach Kevin Van Maanen said it was just a frustrating night for Pella Christian all around and says the girls need more practice time with everyone together to help fix some of those problems. PCM was led by Jordyn Wood with 11 ponts, Shelby Houseman added 10, while Taylor Van Roekel scored nine and Stephanie Hayden added 8. Pella Christian was led by Bekah Posthuma abd Shelby Weaver each with 8 points. The Eagles fell to 1-1 on the season and are ofF until next Tuesday when they travel to South Tama to start LHC play. PCM is 1-0 and opens defense of the Heart of Iowa Conference title tonight at home against Grandview Park Baptist.
