Every Christmas, thousands of Marion County residents open festively-wrapped boxes that contain a new shirt, coat, shoes, or other clothing item. But where do the clothes that they replace go? If they don’t end up pushed into the back of the closet, a lot of them end up in consignment shops for others to enjoy. Michelle Vander Beek, owner of the Concrete Closet in Pella says all of the new clothes at Christmas typically make December and January slower months at her store, but says retail events like Christmas and back-to-school shopping also create a spike in people cleaning out their closets, which means fresh items for consignment.
