An electrical flare-up at the Otley substation at Highway 163 and 180th Avenue shortly after 6am caused a power outage for approximately 500 Pella Rural Electric Cooperative customers. Jean Van Wyk with the REC reports that power was restored by approximately 7:35. MidAmerican energy reported that approximately 80 customers in Marion County and 140 Jasper County customers were without power, in what may be a related outage. Pella Fire Department, Pella Ambulance, the Iowa State Patrol, and Marion County Sheriff deputies responded to the scene in addition to Pella Rural Electric Cooperative Crews. Van Wyk also states that Marion County Road Crews played a critical role in plowing roads that allowed crews to access the site so power could be restored quickly.
