For the second straight game the Pella girls had to grind out a win in the final seconds on the road, but this time came from behind to beat South Tama 49-48 last night. The game got off to a very slow start but was close all the way through. Pella led 7-1 after one quarter and the two teams were tied 14-14 at halftime. Pella held a 27-26 advantage heading into the final quarter and thats when things got a little crazy. With South Tama leading by as many as eight points midway through the fourth quarter, Hali Steenhoek fouled out and the Trojans in the double bonus while Pella hadn’t even reached the single bonus things weren’t looking too promising. However, Pella kept their poise and caught fire late in the fourth quarter. Down two points, Lindsay Bentzinger drained a three pointer from the left wing after South Tama missed two free throws to put Pella up one point with under thirty seconds remaining, then after a South Tama miss Makenzie VanderMolen was fouled and hit two free throws to make it a three point lead with just eight seconds remaining. The Pella defense stiffened and took away the three point shot and South Tama settled for a lay up at the buzzer to give Pella the one point win. Coach Jarod Gralnd says it was one of the craziest games he’s senn in awile but Pella stepped up when it mattered most. Garland says they never panicked and continued to preach to the girls that its a thirty two minute game. Courtney Kelderman was on fire with five three pointers including three in the fourth quarter to lead Pella with 16 points, and Makenzie VanderMolen added 12 as Pella improved to 11-2 overall and 9-1 in teh Little Hawkeye Conference. They host Grinnell Friday night.
