The Pella Christian boys basketball team found themselves trailing Newton early on in last night’s Little Hawkeye Conference match-up, but quickly broke the game open with solid outside shooting and never gave up the lead again, as the Eagles crushed the Cardinals 85-55. Pella Christian’s Jon Holwerda started off hot from beyond the three-point arc, and Eagles’ Head Coach Larry Hessing said the outside shooting helped free up opportunities for the rest of the offense.

“The focus of most of the defenses that we’ve been going against lately has been to try and slow us down on the inside, and we need to keep defenses honest by making some outside shots,” said Hessing. “To see Jon come out and hit three quick and early threes in-a-row was a good thing to see and really got us out to a good start in the ball game.”

Holwerda finished the game with 14 points, and was one of six Pella Christian players to score in double figures, led by a 17-point, 7 rebound night from Kyle Nikkel. The Eagles’ also shot 30-for-38 from the free-throw line, including Nikkel going 9-for-10 and Curtis Roozenboom knocking down all 9 of his attempts. Pella Christian is now 12-3 overall this season, and 9-2 in the LHC. The Eagles are back in action today as they host A-D-M in non-conference play.
