It was a tough night for both Pella wrestlers as both were eliminated during day two of competition in Class 3A at the State Wrestling Tournament last night.
After winning his opening round match Wednesday, Brent Smith was pinned by defending champion Jake Ballweg of Waverly Shell Rock in 1:38 in the quarterfinals then was pinned by Dominic Chase of Bettendorf in the second round consolation in 5:24. Smith has been eliminated from competition and finishes his senior season with a record of 33-6.
In the second round consolations at 189 pounds A.J Arrendell was pinned by two time state champion Evan Knight of Urbandale in 1:25 and has also been eliminated from competition. Arrendahl, a three time state qualifier for Pella ends his senior season at 31-6. Both Smith ad Arrendell finish their careers at Pella with 114 wins which is a new school record.
Earlier in the day in Class 1A first round action at 171 Pleasantville’s Chris Ramirez was pinned by Dacoda Ward of Lisbon in 4:28 but bounced back to win his consolation match 2-1 over Trent Baker of Westwood Sloan. At heavyweight Phil Lumley also of Pleasantville was pinned in 2:19 by Joe Koehn of Elgin but also bounced back to win his consolation by major decision 13-5 over Austin Kromminga of Clarksville. Both wrestlers will be in action in second round consolation matches starting at 9am today trying to advance to the thrid round which is also tonight at 6:30pm at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
