Several local girls basketball players are receiving post season honors for their efforts on the courts this Winter. Named to the All Little Hawkeye Conference first team were Sam Abens and Alex Abens of Knoxville, Makenzie VanderMolen of Pella and Jasmin Schelhaas of Pella Christian , all of which were unanimous selections. Second Team honorees include Kelsey Fynaardt and Hali Steenhoek of Pella, Bekah Posthuma of Pella Christian and Lacy Stevenson of Knoxville. Earning Honorable Mention were Bethany Just and Katie Ayers of Knoxville, Courtney Kelderman and Lindsay Bentzinger of Pella and Jackie Veenstra and Courtney Van Kooten of Pella Christian.
In other post season news, Knoxville’s Sam Abens has been named to the Des Moines All-State third team. Abens led the Panthers to a 23-and-two record and their first entry into the class three-A state tournament since 1975. Abens also finished as the all-time leading scorer in Knoxville school history in the five-on-five era and is second all time in Iowa in three point baskets made for her career. Lindsay Hoehns of Twin Cedars was name first team All-State in class one-A. Hoehns became only the fourth girls in Iowa five-on-five history to score 2,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds.
