Today is Iowa State Flag Day, and by proclamation the Iowa Legislature urges all schools, civic organizations, governmental departments as well as all citizens display the Iowa State Flag, and to reflect on and consider the heritage of the State Flag. The Iowa State Flag, adopted in 1921 was designed by Dixie Cornell Gebhardt of Knoxville. The Knoxville Historic Preservation Commission distributed Iowa State Flags to second and third grade classrooms for the students to color, along with a CD with a recording of local historian Ernie Smith telling the story of Dixie Gebhardt and the Iowa State Flag. Flags colored by the students are on display at local businesses.
