Wednesday is the third day of Severe Weather Awareness Week and focuses on tornado safety. Beginning this spring the National Weather Service in Des Moines will use a new term when reporting severe weather. A “tornado emergency” will be issued in rare instances when significant, widespread damage with a high likelihood of numerous fatalities is expected to continue due to a strong and violent tornado approaching or affecting a highly vulnerable population. The purpose of the new term is to motivate and provide a sense of urgency to those in the path of the storm. As with any severe weather information, the KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team will continue to be on alert and provide you with the most up to date weather information first, fast and accurately.
