Standing by their motto, “We refuse to be rained out,” the Pella boys baseball team somehow found a way to play on their home field last night, and were rewarded with a sweep of a varsity doubleheader with Grinnell. Little Dutch Head Coach Aaron Reasland said the team spent three hours removing water from the infield yesterday morning by using Shop-Vacs and couch cushions – soaking up roughly 300 gallons of water from the saturated field. Reasland himself spent nearly the entire day working the field so the team could face the Tigers.
The Little Dutch maintained the morning’s work ethic in the evening, though, starting with a 5-3 victory in game one behind a complete-game win from pitcher Chris Bandstra. Pella then showed its grit in the second game of the doubleheader, coming back from a 6-5 deficit in the sixth inning by scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 12-7 win.
With the victories, the Pella baseball team now catapults to 4-3 in the Little Hawkeye Conference and 5-5 overall going into another home game tonight, as PCM comes to town. You can hear tonight’s Pella versus PCM baseball game live on 92.1 fm KRLS with Eric Gotschall providing the play-by-play. Pre-game coverage of the varsity contest will begin around 7:15 p.m. with the opening pitch between the Little Dutch and the Mustangs slated for roughly 7:30 p.m. in Pella.
