Knoxville scored six runs over the final four innings of play, the final one an R-B-I single by Jamie VanderVeer in the bottom of the seventh to give the Panthers a 6-5 win over Pella last night in baseball. The Little Dutch threatened to blow the game out in the early innings, taking advantage of timely hitting and Knoxville errors. Pella jumped ahead 2-0 in the third when Ryan Lanke singled home Mark Frommelt and Trevor Wood. Pella upped the lead to five/nothing when Lanke again singled home Frommelt and Wood…Skylar Kane then scored to make it 5-0, but Knoxville took over starting with Mike Jacks belting a solo home run in the fourth, then Knoxville tied it with four runs in the fifth highlighted by Blake McWilliams two R-B-I double. While the offensive output took a few innings to get going for the Panthers the defense had moment of glory as Jack and Colton Spaur both made crucial run saving catches. Coach Steve Mott said those plays were almost more important than getting the runs on the board. Skylar Kane went 4 2/3 innings then Brett Kingery pitched in relief. While the loss was hard to take, Pella Coach Aaron Resland was proud of how his pitchers kept the team in the game. Kingery took the loss going the final 2 2/3 innings giving up one run on four hits, three walks, and one strikeout. Jamie VanderVeer won his own game as he pitched in relief of Lance Daugherty who went 3 2/3 innings. Knoxville improves to 20-8 on the season and 13-6 in the Little Hawkeye Conference while Pella falls to 11-12 and 9-10 in the L-H-C.
