A stirring comeback and a wild finish has put Knoxville in the class 3A baseball sub state tonight after the Panthers scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull off a Houdini-like win over Centerville last night 11-to-ten in the class three-A baseball District. Down 10-5 in the bottom of the seventh, pinch hitter Bryant McWilliams led off with a walk. Eric Jones who was the pitcher for the Panthers by then doubled and scored McWilliams to make it 10-6. Blake McWilliams and Mike Jacks drew back-to-back walks. Lance Daugherty clubbed a double and scored Jones and McWilliams to make the score 10-8. Adam Theil singled in Jacks to make the score 10-9. Kellen Glover was issued an intentional walk to load the bases so Centerville could get the force out at home. However, after Jacob Cunningham struck out Jamie Vanderveer executed a perfect suicide squeeze that scored Daugherty to make it 10-10. Bryant McWilliams stepped up to the plate for the second time in the inning with two outs and the very first pitch went right between the catcher’s legs, and Adam Theil scampered home to plate winning run. After the game, Coach Steve Mott found it hard to explain just how the seventh inning happened, however he added Centerville pitcher Kyle Mondano may have been getting tired in that final inning. Eric Jones got the win pitching three innings of relief. Knoxville now 23-9 and will play Mount Pleasant in Ottumwa tonight for a spot at the class 3A state tournament. You can hear the call on AM 1320 KNIA with the pre game starting at 6:45 the game will also be streamed live on kniakrls.com.
