Over the last ten years, the number of medical imaging tests have increased a great deal in the United States. Dr. Lee Henry, radiologist from Pella Regional Health Center says that to go along with an increase in normal X-ray exams, there has been a large growth in the number of CT Scans given. Dr. Henry says that in comparison, a typical chest X-ray will give you about ten days worth of background radiation–or the amount of radiation that an individual may take on every day from the sun and other elements– and a CT Scan could give you up to 2 years worth of the same background radiation. Dr. Henry says that the amount of radiation that people are exposed to in tests is considered minimal and a tiny fraction of the amount of radiation that is used to treat a disease.
