The Knoxville City Council discussed future wireless communication options for the City at their meeting Monday. The council approved the upgrade of wireless connection for the permanent flow monitoring station that was part of the relief sewer system installation last year, in order to be able to collect that data to determine how large of an equalization basin is needed at the wastewater treatment plant. The total cost of materials and installation of the upgrade was estimated at $11,995.

However, after hearing from representatives from Electronic Engineering, the company whose bid was approved, about future wireless communication opportunities the council approved an additional expense to keep those options open for future upgrades such as surveillance cameras at the city parks and wireless connectivity at facilities such as the street shop, recreation center and library.

The additional cost of the extra cables is estimated to be around $1,000.
