The Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Health and Human Services are working on new guidelines for fluoride content in drinking water, citing concerns of overexposure. Current guidelines recommend a concentration of 2 milligrams per liter with a maximum of 4 milligrams per liter. Under new rules, the amount of fluoride allowed in drinking water would range from 0.7 milligrams per liter to 1.2 milligrams per liter. Pella Water Superintendent Brent Schroder says the water supply in Pella is tested daily for fluoride levels, which currently register at 1.0 milligrams per liter. Knoxville Water Works Director Steve Inskeep says the water supply he oversees is tested twice a month for fluoride levels and currently contains 1.3 milligrams of fluoride per liter. Schroder adds that the City of Pella will confer with the Department of Public Health to determine if adoption of the new guidelines is necessary and make changes depending on the outcome of that conference.
