Two Oskaloosa film producers have recenly completed a documentary about the former Southeast Iowa coal mining town of Buxton. Jason Madison and Jacob Rosdail put the film together when Madison wanted to learn more about his family’s roots in the town. They say what separates Buxton from other boom and bust towns of the time was the diverse population of Buxton. The town was made up not only of European immigrants typical of mining towns of the era, but African-Americans as well. The film makers say the African-American workers did not experience the segregation or race issues typical of that time until the mine shut down and they were forced to move to other parts of the state and country. The film has been screened at Central College. Future air dates for the documentary can be found here.
