The United Way of Central Iowa has chosen a Knoxville native as their 2011 Advocate of the Year. Heather McDermott who currently works at Principal Financial group was chosen for her advocacy on behalf of the Whyld Girls – a program at Children and Family Urban Ministries. There McDermott serves as a life coach for teenage girls and has organized fundraisers where the girls learn presentation skills, character building and belief in themselves.
Heather is a 1996 graduate of Knoxville High School and the daughter of Dale and Charlene Holst of Knoxville.
McDermott received the award earlier this month and was chosen by a panel of 12 judges who represent central Iowa businesses and nonprofit organizations.
