A tough start was followed by a strong rebound at the Class 1-A Boys Individual State Tennis Meet for the duo of Will Loux and Brannon Johnson on Pella High. The doubles team representing the Little Dutch drew the third-seeded team from Maharishi and were defeated 6-0, 6-1 in the opening round of the Championship bracket.
Loux and Johnson bounced back in the Consolation bracket with a 6-4, 6-2 win over the doubles team from Chariton; then followed up that performance with a gritty 7-6 win in the first set of their match with Spirit Lake’s doubles team that went to a 7-5 tiebreaker. After overcoming the first set, the senior and junior tandem closed the door with a 6-1 win in the second set.
Pella’s Will Loux and Brannon Johnson will now face a doubles team from Aplington-Parkersburg today in the Consolation semifinals. A win would give the members of the Little Dutch tennis team a chance to play either Boone or Storm Lake for fifth place.
The Class 1-A Boys Individual State Tennis Meet concludes today at the Byrne’s Park Tennis Complex in Waterloo.
